Vesak has arrived.

This is Vesak season. In the month of Vesak, which means the month of May, trees and vines are loaded with flowers, and the whole environment is beautified. The full moon shines in the blue sky to illuminate Vesak. The Vesak festival is celebrated in memory of Lord Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death. Everyone prepares to celebrate Vesak with great devotion. On that day, the temples are filled with devotees dressed in white. On Vesak Day, every village and city is lit up with Vesak lanterns and pandals. The very beautiful Vesak decorations, lanterns, and pandals erected everywhere will enchant everyone.

The Vesak festival in the Buddha year 2567 is a great day for the Buddhist people of Sri Lanka and the Buddhist people of the world. In memory of that day, Vesak zones have also been created in many places in Sri Lanka which include pandan, Free food stalls-"dansals", devotional songs, and concerts. Many people are seen having fun in the Vesak zones because they are full of festivities. On this particular full moon Poya day, devout Buddhists observe Sil (practicing austerities) and go to the temple.

As usual, five colored (Blue, Yellow, Red, White, Orange) Buddhist flags are hoisted all over the country for the Vesak festival.

Seeing an old man, a sick person, a dead body, and a monk's figure, which are the four omens of Prince Siddhartha, the mind turns to leave the lay house. After that, for six years, he lived as an ascetic and performed austerities. And on the day of Vesak Full Moon Poya, he realized the Four Noble Truths and became a Buddha.

Everyone participates in the great Vesak festival, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and the death of Gautama Buddha.

People of other religions can also be seen hanging a vesak lantern and joining the Tri-Feast.

Why is Vesak special?

It is on Vesak full moon day that the Lord Buddha, who realized the truth of the world, was born, became a Buddha (Enlightened - becoming arahant), and passed away (Sanskrit:parinirvāna and pāli:parinibbāna) - death of an arahant; release from suffering of samsara. To remember these, the Buddhist people of the world engage in various religious ceremonies for them. In the distant past of the Bodhisattva, when he was an ascetic Sumedha, the Bodhisattvas received the definitive explanation from the Lord Buddha named Dipankara on a Vesak day. Lord Buddha came to Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and came to 'Samanala' Mountain,  placed his left foot mark on "Samanala" Mountain, "Sri Pada," on Vesak day. Several other very special incidents like this happened on the day of Vesak Full Moon day (Pura Pasaloswaka Poya).

It seems that many people are preparing for Vesak and are going to see Vesak with great enthusiasm. Very beautiful Vesak lanterns are erected and hung in many places.

Different types of lanterns can be found all over the country. Among them, we have seen some people making and displaying lotus flowers, star, etc.-shaped lanterns. The most common of these lampshades is the popular Vesak lantern.

In addition, it is customary to create and display large-scale, spectacular lanterns for the Vesak festival.

While hanging these Vesak baskets or lanterns, a lamp, a candle, or a light bulb is lit in them. In this way, lanterns with different shapes can be considered light offerings made for the Buddha.

The "Atapattam" Vesak Lantern.

Vesak Lantern

This picture shows the Vesak lantern I made for this Vesak. I bought a plastic template to make this. After that, three colors of tissue paper were used to cover the template beautifully and colorfully. The waves extending down from it are also cut and pasted from those three colors.

The four quadrilaterals of the Vesak Lantern speak about the four truths. The eight triangles reflect the eight laws of the world of the person called in Sinhala "Ata Lo Dahama": (gain, loss, good, bad, reproach, praise, pleasure, sorrow.) The mass of waves reflects the never-ending cycle of reincarnation called 'Samsara'. The emptying of the top and bottom of the lantern represents birth and death.

Displaying of Jātaka Stories.

The stories of the former lives of Lord Buddha are called Jātaka tales.

This image shows the pantheon that was built in the town of Wadduwa. One "Jātaka" story has been depicted in this pantheon.

Often the pantheons are created based on one or more 'Jātaka' stories. The Pantheon shown above is brightly illuminated with flickering light bulbs of various colors, and their colors change over time.

A common feature seen in many pandals is the image of Lord Buddha sitting in lotus position or standing in the middle of the pandal, at the top of the pandal, or at the bottom, and the shimmering, colorful band that surrounds the Lord Buddha's image. The halo or ring of rays is visualized as the petals of a beautiful, colorful ornamental flower, as radiating colored light in a circle, or as some other decorative pattern made attractive by colorful electric light.

Then pandals are made, often on the theme of a "Jātaka" story. Various parts of the Jātaka story are displayed in colorful pictures and numbered, respectively. There are streams of colorful lights that are twinkling or decorations around the parts that have those numbers.

"Buddha Rashmi Vesak Region"

"Buddha Rashmi" Vesak region is organized by President, prime minister offices in Gangarama, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
In this Vesak region, the most ornately designed Vesak lanterns are presented in the competition. Beautifully designed lanterns and creations are displayed here. The best designs are selected, and they are given prizes.

The design above were given the first place, and the prize was SLR 5,00,000.

There were nearly 200 Vesak lanterns and designs submitted for the competition. All the lanterns were of high quality and painstakingly made using natural materials. Some designs were meticulous. Most of the Vesak lanterns in the "Buddha Rashmi Vesak" region were made using various natural materials such as banana fiber, coconut ekel, coconut shell, etc. They had spent almost a year creating some of those Vesak lanterns. There were several lanterns that were very huge.

Not only in this Vesak region but all over the country, we can see how these very beautiful Vesak lanterns are displayed. One of the characteristics found in those Vesak lanterns is that they are divided into beautiful branches and rotated in different directions. In addition to these movements, it is further embellished with flickering, colorful streams of light.

In anticipation of this religious festival that comes once a year, all the streets of the country are decorated with various decorations and colorful lights. This Vesak season is a time of great celebration where people get separated from their busy lives and get enlightened by sermons.

On the occasion of Vesak, Buddhists engage in various rituals. The temples plan most of the preparations ahead of time for their own Vesak celebration. Celebrating austerities, freeing animals like cattle sacrificed for death, almsgiving, pandals, processions, etc. take place. Not only that, but "dansals", providing clothes to poor passenger beggars, providing food and drinks, conducting devotional singing concerts—many different kinds of services are done here.

Free food and beverages stalls. "Dansel"

Another common aspect of Vesak is the holding of "Dhansala". This time, dansals that give away drinks, sago, and rice were held in different areas and streets of our village. There were many dansals all over the country. A very large crowd was seen in those queues in front of the "dansals".

People, rich and poor, go to those "dansals". It is a very valuable and beautiful experience for the people who are tired after watching Vesak to have a drink in this "dansal" or to satisfy their hunger.

In this way, offering drinks and food to people is a very meritorious task. Dansal is conducted by several people joining and organizing cooperatively. By doing this kind of work, peace and cooperation among people will be developed.

People queuing up to get food from "dansals" participate in it respectfully. It is also said that going to get food and drinks from "dansals" in this way is called worshiping "dansals" .

Singing devotional songs.

There was a scene where male and female army personnel sang some devotional songs to the background music while riding in a boat that was attractively made and floated down the river near the Gangarama temple.

Also, schoolgirls dressed in white children's sarees singing devotional songs on temple grounds and on the streets were seen.

On the day of Vesak, which is celebrated with great respect, let us all remember to follow the path taught by the Lord Buddha.

Identifying damage to plants due to excessive water and solutions to save the plants.

Identifying overwatered plants and solutions to save the plants What is over-watering? Overwatering simply means giving the plant water, which often causes the soil to become constantly saturated, which eventually leads to root rot and plant death. Overwatering is the number-one houseplant killer and the reason people struggle to care for their plants. Signs that the plant is over-watered Wet plant soil Wet plant soil seems to be the most obvious sign that you have an overwatered plant. But this can be misleading.  Different plants have different water needs. We can say that knowing if the plant is overwatered does not entirely depend on the observation of soil moisture alone. Here, whenever we water our plants, it is best practice to completely saturate the soil and allow it to dry out until the next watering. Yellowing leaves It is also a sign that the plant is deficient in water. If it is caused by overwatering the plant, the plant will essentially drown as the soil becomes constant
